Katarina Wester
Instructor

Katarina Wester, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, has enjoyed a successful ballet career in Sweden and the United States. Her formal training began at the Royal Swedish Ballet School under the direction of Albert & Nina Kozlovsky and Gösta Svalberg. She also studied at the Bartholin International Seminar in Copenhagen, Denmark, and at Rosella Hightower’s Conservatory in Cannes, France. After graduation and apprenticeship at the Royal Swedish Ballet, Katarina became a principal dancer with the Gothenburg Ballet under the direction of Ulf Gadd. Seven years later, she returned to the Royal Swedish Ballet under the direction of Nils-Åke Häggbom, where she performed the works of many notable choreographers. During her formal training and subsequent career as a professional dancer, Katarina was awarded numerous scholarships from such notable institutions as the Carina Ari Foundation, the City of Stockholm and the City of Gothenburg.

Her body of work includes roles among others: Odette/Odile in "Swan Lake" (Sulamith Messerer), Kitri in "Don Quixote" (Roberto Trinchero), the Sugarplum Fairy and Snow Queen in "The Nutcracker" (Sir Anton Dolin), "The Sleeping Beauty" (Dame Beryl Gray), Mazurka in "Les Sylphides" (Michail Fokine), “Giselle” (Erik Bruhn), Marcha in "The Seagull" (Maya Plisetskaya), the Maid in "The House of Bernarda" (Mats Ek), "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (Sir Frederick Ashton), "Napoli" and "The Conservatory" (August Bournonville), the girl in "Three Argentinean Dances" and "Anne Frank" (Mauricio Wainrot), "The Four Temperaments" (George Balanchine), "Miss Julie" (Birgit Cullberg), "Schubert Symphony" (Choo-San Goh), “Stoolgame” (Jirí Kylian), “Rite of Spring” (Maurice Béjart), “Coppelia”, “The Ring”, “Diaghilev’s Russian Ballet”, “Tango, Buenos Aires 1907”, “Seven Japanese Scenes” (Ulf Gadd) and several productions for Swedish television.

In the United States, Katarina has worked as principal dancer, teacher and choreographer, while continuing her studies of dance medicine. With the Contra Costa Ballet, since 2003, she works with both the school and company in the capacity of teacher, rehearsal mistress, choreographer and character dancer. She is also the director of the Contra Costa Ballet Outreach Program.
